Women’s Healthcare
At UNPC Family Health Clinic our medical clinicians specialize in the healthcare needs of women in every phase of life-from adolescence, through childbearing years, menopause and beyond.
Wellness and Preventative Care for Women
Cervical cancer is one type of gynecological cancer. It can be prevented by getting a routine, annual pelvic exam and Pap test. An important screening test to detect cervical cancer at a stage when there are often no symptoms, pelvic exams and Pap test (or Pap smears) are samples of cells taken from the cervix to look for cellular changes. An abnormal Pap test does not necessarily mean a woman has cervical cancer. The pelvic exam and Pap test are recommended every one to three years (depending on risk factors) for sexually active women and those over age 21.
Breast Exams & Mammograms
Breast exams performed by a healthcare provider are recommended annually for all women 18 years and older. Our healthcare providers can also train you to properly perform your monthly breast self-exams. Talk to our providers about the best time for you to begin mammogram screening for breast cancer, usually at age 40. Mammograms may be recommended earlier with a positive family history of breast cancer and are performed at a local breast imaging center.
Birth Control Counseling
The decision on which method is right for you should be made with your healthcare provider, as well as your partner. Our providers can discuss your options and if necessary, provide a contraceptive prescription that best meets your needs. Birth control refers to any activity, medication, or equipment used to prevent pregnancy. There are many types of birth control available including oral contraceptives, weekly transdermal patches, monthly intermuscular injections, vaginal rings, and implantable intra-uterine devices. Our providers can discuss your options if you do not wish to get pregnant and provide a contraceptive option that best meets your needs.
Gynecology
Our medical providers are experts in gynecological health issues for women of all ages, including those needing hormone testing and menopause care. Common gynecologic conditions managed at our office include ovarian cyst, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, vaginal infections, sexually transmitted disease, urinary incontinence, and irregular menstrual bleeding. UNPC Family Health Clinic provides on-site hormone testing and laboratory blood work. We have local diagnostic centers convenient for pelvic ultrasounds, breast mammograms, and any of your advanced imaging needs. Our healthcare providers work collaborately with consultants including gynecologic surgeons experienced in hysterectomy, uterine fibroid embolization, tubal ligation, endometrial ablation, myomectomy and pelvic reconstructive surgery.
